Productivity Hack Friday: Learn a language in your free time, for free

By

Learning a second (or third, or fourth – and so on) language is something many people want to do. Knowing another tongue can open up career opportunities, become a stepping stone to other languages and at a basic level make finding directions on holiday much, much easier.

As an Anywhere Working, you have the opportunity to take on the task of learning another language, as working flexibly gives you more moments in the day to make the most of – these gaps, when travelling on the go are perfect for learning something new.

But it is easier said than done, and for many people learning a second language can be a difficult task. It is true that it is much harder to learn another language as adults rather than children, plus we don’t have the liberty of French or German classes in the middle of work. So where to find the time?

Usually some sort of evening or weekend class makes sense, or perhaps an audiobook you listen to on the go. One of the most successful ways we have seen if through Rosetta Stone, software you can use in your free time – whether at work, home, a coffee shop or on the go. However it can be an expensive commitment.

How about an open source tool for learning? Similar to the Rosetta Stone method, Memrise.com uses images and audio, with continuous testing and a little gamifaction (earn points!) to help you learn whatever language you are interested in.

It is a community run project, a sort of Wikipedia for learning, where members can correct courses and even create their own. You may be wary of courses being created by anyone, but the most popular tend to be the best and very reliable. Find out more on how it works, here.

Memrise.com is a quick, simple and free way to learn a new language when you find the time. Why not learn a new language today, find a moment in the day where you have a little spare time and try it out!
